Final Stats & Conclusion

There was only a handful of really good games worth staying in during the WSOP. It's pretty much the same action you'd find during the rest of the year. If I recall correctly, the action was about the same in previous years. As tourists/pros came in from around the world, there was a more extreme mix of good/bad players. To summarize, I think it's over-hyped. If anything next year, I should try not to force an exaggerated amount of hours and just play a standard 40-58hrs/wk.

Updated Stats & An Epic Win (Bally's, Wynn, South Point, Orleans)

It's been a roller coaster ride the past few days, though I finally broke my previous 1/2NL session record (Luxor +1624 on 6/24/08) at Bally's. The irony is that my biggest losing session took place at Bally's as well (-875). The game was pretty fun and above average action.

Day 21 (Bellagio)

Lots of action at the 2/5. Lost significant-sized pots to set/set and AQss/K4 pre-flop shove yet still showed a healthy profit. One guy apparently lost 5k in an hour or so. Made the game pretty good. If only all the games were like this!

Day 19 (South Point, Bellagio)

Played 2/5NL at South Point (I think for the first time ever). This game barely runs. The game was actually pretty tough in relation to the standard off-Strip casinos. Lots of decent regular players I've played with at other places. Ran/played somewhat bad.

South Point 1/2NL: 5m -2
South Point 2/5NL: 2h10m -589

Drove to Bellagio and played 1/3NL. It was probably the best 100bb max game I've ever played in. Lots of action. I badly misplayed at least a couple of hands; missed lots of value, giving free cards when I shouldn't, and not taking a free card when I obviously should. Regardless I ended up with a decent profit (though could've easily been +1k). I left some good money on the table, though I don't feel too bad as I met my hourly quota for the day and was tired anyways.

A Short Break & Day 14 (Red Rock Station)

Pretty decent game. The bad beat jackpot hit at GVR, so players playing at any Station Casinos while that happened got a share of it. Nice little "rebate." It would have been awesome to be involved in that hand (quads/straight flush).

Enjoyed the Heat/Spurs Game 1 and ate a pretty good meal at Wazuzu (Encore) afterwards. Drunken Noodles w/ Chicken, Nasi Goreng, and Mongolian Beef. The service was excellent as well.

Day Nine (Red Rock Station)

I'm putting in freeroll hours for Station Casinos as well. Asides from being ~13 miles away, Red Rock has pretty much everything I could hope for. Green Valley Ranch's action is sometimes better, though the 2/5NL doesn't run that often.

Played at 4 different tables. One was out of the norm and actually pretty tough. The rest were pretty standard, which equates to really good (love playing against certain locals).

Day Eight (South Point)

More action than usual at South Point. I was hesitant to play there for the freeroll (100hrs by June 30 to qualify) as it is generally a waste of time to play in their 1/2NL game. People fold ALOT here. I did some calculations and I would have to make the final table to make up for the difference in expected winrate between 1/2NL and 2/5NL over 100hrs (10th place pays $2k). But of course my goal isn't to mincash; I wouldn't be completely satisfied playing any tournament without finishing 1st.

Sacrificing 100hrs during WSOP is tough, but if last night's game was an indication of this month's games, it should be worth the time. Plus I live within walking distance, which might actually be the main factor. On the plus side, there are worse jobs than grinding two weeks of nitty 1/2NL (though not many. lol! just kidding..kind of). Time to pad those 1/2NL stats. 12.5h completed, 87.5 to go.

A Couple Days Off & Day Seven (Wynn)

Took some time off. Played in a decent 1/3NL though it eventually got somewhat tough/bad so I left.

Some horses I saw at South Point.

Two all-ins preflop. Both players had KK; one caught runner runner flush. Wanted to chop it pre too. Run good/run bad.

Day Four (Wynn)

Choppy action at the Wynn on Friday afternoon. Played at 4 different tables including one terrible 2/5NL (grinder central). The last table was pretty soft though.

Day Three (Wynn, Treasure Island)

Back to my regular office! Good results.

Pretty dirty beat I witnessed at my table. It was for a small pot, but still pretty sick. I've been on the winning and losing end of bottom set turning into quads, both times for ~600bb pots. If you play long enough, you'll see ridiculous things like this and might not even be affected anymore (though it still sucks when losing).

Wynn 1/3NL: 5h35m +616

I normally don't leave when I'm profiting at a table (usually stay until I put in my hours for the day). The game was shorthanded and became pretty bad though, so I left. Decided to drop by Treasure Island. Pretty soft game with some action. It's usually a nit fest (and half the table was), though some players made the game pretty good. Picked up a few bucks.

Day One (Aria, Bellagio, Rio)

Woke up pretty early and got a large Spicy Sriracha Burger combo from Jack in the Box. Fed some to the birds as well. Went to MGM Grand and Monte Carlo afterwards though didn't feel like waiting for a seat. Saw "Hershey's Chocolate World" under construction at New York New York. Seems pretty cool.

Aria 2/5NL: 2h20m -6
Bellagio 1/3NL: 2h5m -89

Went to Sonic for my lunch break. Got a Chicken Toaster combo:

Rio cash games were pretty much as expected -- a more extreme mix of skilled/recreational players compared to the common year-round games. My play was very questionable yet still turned a small profit. A couple of the dealers could use a little more professionalism, but for the most part, the staff was courteous/well run for how busy it was (at least in the room near the buffet).

Prequel

I've ran pretty good and played well (for the most part) so far this year. The graph shown is my net profit after 406 hours of playing mainly 1/3NL, mixed in with some 1/2NL, 2/5NL, and 5/10NL

I took quite a bit of time off towards the end of last year as I was running bad and playing even worse. -16k+ downswing over 521 hours with only ~3k of that at 5/10NL. That's pretty bad. I'm relieved that I have since recovered from what was the second largest downswing of my poker career. A short break does wonders!

I haven't played much this month as I am purposely taking it easy to get ready for the WSOP. I plan on putting in lots of volume, preferably 60-70 hrs/wk throughout the series. Mainly cash games throughout the city and at least one of the 1k events next month. I'm curious to see how the "rare" games are that barely/never run throughout the year at the smaller rooms, ie. 5/10NL at Mandalay Bay or 2/5NL at Excalibur. I will probably do some sort of Vegas poker tour. It should be pretty interesting.
